| Thornewood Castle -
Lakewood Nestled on four acres at American Lake and dotted with old growth fir trees is Thornewood Castle. Built in 1908 by Chester A. Thorne, this 27,000 square foot manor is of the Gothic Tudor style and is the only one of its kind on the west coast. Built as a single family residence, Thornewood is now a gracious country inn that has been lovingly restored. Walk through the halls where Presidents and dignitaries walked. Presidents William Howard Taft and Theodore Roosevelt spent the night in our presidential suite. Roam the grounds and lovely 1/2 acre sunken English perennial garden, swim, fish, or boat on the beautiful American Lake. Enjoy watching remarkable sunsets from the hand tiled lakeside patio. Medieval stained glass window insets adorn the manor as well as antique furniture and paintings. Whatever your choices, we will pamper you and make your stay with us a special memory. |
Thornewood Castle is the private residence of Wayne and Deanna Robinson. For more information or to reserve a suite please call Deanna Robinson or Leann Davis at 253-584-4393 or fax 253-584-4497 9 am to 6 pm PST

| Schmidt House - Three
Meter - Tumwater Built in 1904 by Albert McIntosh for Leopold and Johanna Schmidt and family, the house was dubbed "Three Meter" by the Schmidt’s five sons who were called to continually climb the hill from the Brewery to the house. The house is a two-and-one-half story structure combining Colonial Revival elements with bungalow influences in a west wing added in the 1920s. In addition to the garage, another small outbuilding was constructed in the 1950s on the property east of the house. Originally a stable and coach house, as well as a greenhouse stood on the grounds. Also on the grounds is a memorial garden where the remains of Leopold and Peter Schmidt and their wives are interred. The property is now owned and maintained by The Olympia-Tumwater Foundation which rents it for private and public events. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Tumwater Historic District. 330 Schmidt Place SW; Built 1904 |
